What is the difference between manhwa, manhua, manga and webtoon?

Webtoon

It was a term that originated in South Korea and represents works made available for reading online. Its main feature is to be published digitally in infinite scroll to adapt to the use of cell phones, tablets, computers, etc. Even some have special sounds and effects.

Manhwa

Manhwa is a general Korean term for comic books outside Korea (both South and North). In South Korea, manhwagas (manhwa artists) are free to express themselves through art, while in North Korea, manhwas have the role of exalting the communist government and criticizing American and Japanese colonialism.

Manhua

Term used to refer to Chinese comics. Most have realistic, well-detailed strokes and are usually colored. However, the question of the trait is changing recently, some are simple, some are more realistic and some are very “Americanized”. The reading direction is from right to left. They are linked with the printed form, but they can also have digital forms. Some are in color, others in black and white, there is no fixed rule for colors. Curiosity: authors of manhuas are called manhuajia.

Manga

It is the term used to refer to Japanese comics. It is characterized by having expressive characters with large eyes, art generally not very realistic and being published in black and white – although some have colored covers in special publications.
